Powers, exponentials, logarithms, and the derivative

The problems follow the sections of the theory. Those that are checked at once get new numbers every time you press New variant: repeat them until the method runs by itself. Those with a solution you solve on paper. Write the whole argument before you open the solution, then compare line by line. Last come problems in the form of the exam, with points and a marking scheme.

A firm's daily output depends on its capital $K > 0$ as $Y = 12\,K^{1/3}.$

(a) Without computing anything: does the graph of $Y$ rise or fall, and which way does it bend? Which Fact tells you?

(b) By what factor does output grow when the capital is multiplied by $8?$ By $27?$

(c) Compute $Y$ for $K = 8,$ $27$ and $64.$ How much extra capital did each extra $12$ units of output need? What is this called?

Hint

The exponent decides the shape. For (b), compare $Y$ at $8K$ with $Y$ at $K{:}$ the $K$ cancels.

Solve for $x.$

(a) $e^{x} - 10e^{-x} = 3$

(b) $3\cdot 2^{x} = 7\cdot 5^{x}$

Hint

In (a) the unknown sits in two exponentials whose sum cannot be simplified by ${\ln}{:}$ put $u = e^{x}.$ In (b) both sides are products, so $\ln$ can be taken at once.

Let $f(t) = A\,a^{t}$ with $A > 0$ and $a > 1,$ and let $k > 1.$

(a) Show that the time $T$ in which $f$ grows by the factor $k$ is $T = \dfrac{\ln k}{\ln a},$ whatever $A$ is and whenever you start.

(b) Show that for every such $f$ the tripling time is the doubling time multiplied by $\dfrac{\ln 3}{\ln 2}.$

(c) A quantity doubles in $9$ years. How long does it take to triple?

Hint

Write down what "grows by the factor $k$ in the time $T,$ starting at $t$" means as an equation, and see what cancels. The reason behind Fact 2.13 is the model.

Let $f(x) = 2x^{2} - 5x + 1.$

(a) Compute $f'(a)$ from the definition, following the five steps of Method 2.18.

(b) At which step did you use that $h \ne 0,$ and why may you not put $h = 0$ at the very beginning?

(c) For which $a$ is the tangent horizontal?

Hint

After step 2 nothing without $h$ may be left. If something is, look for a slip in the expansion of $(a+h)^{2}.$

Let $f(x) = |x|.$

(a) Write down the Newton quotient of $f$ at $a = 0,$ and compute it for $h > 0$ and for $h < 0.$

(b) Explain why $f'(0)$ does not exist.

(c) Show that $f'(2)$ does exist, and find it.

Hint

$|h| = h$ for $h > 0$ and $|h| = -h$ for $h < 0.$ For (c): which values does $|2 + h|$ take when $h$ is small, whatever its sign?

Problem 17●●○ IntermediateSolution included

A firm's total cost of producing $Q$ units is $C(Q) = 500 + 8Q + 0.02\,Q^{2}.$

(a) Find the marginal cost $C'(Q),$ and its value at $Q = 200.$

(b) Compute the exact extra cost of the $201$st unit, $C(201) - C(200),$ and compare it with (a). Which Fact explains the agreement?

(c) Compute the average rate of change of the cost between $Q = 200$ and $Q = 250.$ Why is it not equal to $C'(200)?$

(d) What happens to the answers in (a)–(c) if the fixed cost $500$ is doubled?

Hint

Fact 2.20 gives $C'.$ The average rate of change between two points is the slope of the secant through them.

Problem 19●●● ChallengeSolution included

A function $f$ is differentiable on the whole real line, with derivative $f'(x) = x\,(x-2)^{2}.$ You are not asked to find $f.$

(a) Make a sign diagram for $f'$ and say where $f$ is increasing and where it is decreasing.

(b) True or false, with a reason: "$f'(2) = 0,$ so the graph of $f$ turns round at $x = 2.$"

(c) Show that $f$ is strictly increasing on $[0, \infty),$ although $f'$ is not positive at every point there.

Hint

A square is never negative. For (c): if an increasing function takes the same value at two points, what does it do between them — and what would Fact 2.23 then say about $f'?$

Problem 20●●○ IntermediateSolution included

You are offered two contracts. Both start at a yearly salary of $300$ (thousand kronor). On contract A the salary rises by $12$ every year; on contract B it rises by $3.5\%$ every year.

(a) Write the salary after $t$ years on each contract as a function of $t.$ What kind of function is each?

(b) Compute both salaries after $5$ years and after $20$ years.

(c) In which year is B's salary larger than A's for the first time? Explain why Method 2.11 does not find that year, and find it another way.

Hint

"By $12$" adds; "by $3.5\%$" multiplies. For (c), look at where the unknown sits in the equation $A(t) = B(t).$

Problem 21●●○ IntermediateSolution included

A firm's profit from selling $Q \ge 0$ units is $\pi(Q) = -0.5\,Q^{2} + 60\,Q - 1000.$

(a) Find $\pi'(Q).$ Where is the profit increasing, and where is it decreasing? Which quantity gives the largest profit, and how large is it?

(b) Find the tangent to the graph of $\pi$ at $Q = 40.$

(c) Use the tangent to estimate $\pi(42),$ and compare with the exact value.

Hint

Fact 2.20, then the sign of $\pi'.$ The tangent needs two numbers: $\pi(40)$ and $\pi'(40).$
